i just had to add a comment about this.  because it's been disturbing me...

but i wanted to say that i think the motivation is less about being
compensated for music and more about not enabling others to be compensated
for their music.  i don't think that anyone gets involved in the arts with
the intention of making a living.  but i for one find it disturbing how many
people there are out there trying to make a living off of artists.  (which
is not to say that they are successful, mind you.  it's just that there are
a lot of them out there.)

i think that is a caveat that is missed.  it's not about whether or not one
intends to make a living.  it's about whether or not one intends to be taken
advantage of.  these are not the same issue.
