I'm a big believer in "less is more". When I am going for nice sound
quality (which is rare for me!) I use an AKG 414, a Mackie board for
the mic pre and a dbx 160x compressor into my MOTU firewire rig. I
then compress it again in software and maybe tweak the EQ a bit. I
abhor noise gates (except in specific, problematic situations) and
think that even EQ is often disasterously abused by novices. When in
doubt, do nothing. A good mic into a good pre should need almost no EQ.
Podcasts should be compressed to death, in most cases, but that
should be the very last step.
It's hard because it is an art, not a product. But it's not that hard
of an art if you have good ears and the patience to keep at it.
